What is Ampligen ?

Ampligen is an artificial RNA (ribo-nucleic-acid), an RNA which has been "wrongly" cross bound.  The manufacturer of Ampligen is the US based pharmaceutical company Hemispherx who has US patent on this product and 300 other so-called Oragen drugs, i.e. (artificial) RNA-designer drugs. Ampligen information from Hemispherx, ampligen05.txt.

Peer Reviewed Research Papers:  Close to zero

Normally one would expect a constant stream of scientific literature when a new and efficient drug is being introduced.  On Ampligen, however, the mode of action in clinical studies, its effects and side-effects etc., is not yet available. Four 1994-abstracts,  Suhadolnik et al., 1994.

Mechanism of action of Ampligen ?

The exact mechanism of action of Ampligen in humans is still largely unknown.  It is believed that Ampligen interacts with both viruses and the body's acute phase response:  Kimura-Takeuchi et al., 1992,  Hendrix et al., 1993,  Kimura et al., 1994, and  Majde et al., 1998.

Preliminary results

At the 1999-CFS conference, Ampligen was presented as being beneficial to severely ill patients,  news, Demeirleir et al., 1999.  At the 2001- AACFS conf., Hemispherx presented the first results of the so-called 511-study,  Ampligen, my own comments, 2001.  A study involving 2 (two) women with impressive results,  Snell et al., 2001.

At the 17th International Conf. on Antiviral Research in 2004, Hemispherx Biopharma, the makers of Ampligen, finally presented a paper by Carter et al.  Their results included 234 patients from 12 centers involved in the phase III study, ampligen04.txt.  Review of  Department of Health and Human Services CFS Advisory Committee Fifth meeting in Washington, D.C., press.ampligen04.txt.
