Anti Viral Treatments

Dr. Lerner's group, in collaboration with Glaxo Wellcome, treated a subset of CFS patients with anti-viral drug Valacyclovir,  letter, Lerner et al., 2001.,  Lerner et al., 2002.  A subset of CFS patients benefited from treatment, lerner.etal07.txt.

In a Danish study Valacyclovir was not effective in treating FM symptoms, kendall.etal04.txt.

Isoprinosine, another anti-viral drug has been tested by Dr. Byron Hyde in collaboration with the manufacturer in a pilot study, diaz-mitoma.etal03.txt,  diaz-mitoma.etal03.pdf.  Another manufacturer, Newport Pharmaceuticals presented an abstract in Seattle, 2000, also using Isoprinosine,  Kumar et al., 2000.

Acclydine, Belgian researchers (in collaboration with the manufacturer) presented preliminary results,  De Becker et al., 2003.  However, another study found no improvements in fatigue and no differences in IGF1 status in CFS patients compared to healthy matched neighborhood controls, the.etal07.txt.

One trial use Valganciclovir in patients with elevated antibody titers against (HHV-6) and (EBV), kogelnik.etal06.txt, kogelnik.etal06.pdf. These researchers concluded, that the preliminary clinical and laboratory observations merit additional studies to establish whether this clinical response is mediated by an antiviral effect of the drug, indirectly via immunomodulation or by placebo effect, kogelnik.etal07.txt
