CMO - UK 2002 Guidelines

In the UK the Chief Medical Officer's "Independent Report" on CFS/ME was published Jan 2002,  CMO, UK, Key conclusion (link), 2002.  A major work effort was put into this 3-year project, the results have been disputed,  CMO (UK), (pdf).

UK, in Dec 2002 published their Medical Research Council CFS/ME Report, mrc.cfs.me02.pdf. Comment,  dowsett.MCRA.03.txt.  Letters in The Lancet regarding the report by Jane Colby, Dr. Chaudhuri, and Drs. Prins et al.  letters, Colby et al., 2002.  Psychiatrist, Dr. Sharpe wrote this comment,  Sharpe, 2002.  This report has resulted in highly disputed guidelines for the management of CFS (primarily looked upon as a disease with fatigue as the main feature), The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), guidelines.NICE04.txt. Responses from patient groups, NICE.guidelines.MEAresponse06.txt, NICE.guidelines.response06.txt.

York University Report (UK)

A most important - and very impressive - review of CFS/ME-treatment trials was released from York University,  Bagnall et al., 2001 (pdf).  A summary outlining the principal guidelines for managing ME/CFS,  interventions, York, 2002.

Australian Guidelines

The vote is still out as to whether this report represents a step forward, or backwards, in terms of improving the Australian CFS patients' situation. One patient organization has responded,  letter, Larkins & Molesworth, 2002.  The newest guidelines from Australia, aimed at general practice, australian.guidelines04.pdf.

CBT in Multidisciplinary Approach

Dr. Pinching wrote a plan for management of CFS,  Pinching, 2002, and Drs. Sykes & Campion wrote on the psychological treatment,  Sykes & Campion, 2002.  Dr. Klimas has published a brochure on this issue,  Klimas, 2002.  A literature review concluded that the etiology of CFS is still not understood and that doctors’ attitudes need revision,  Stein, 2001.

One Dr. Richardson wrote a 2002 ME-review: Guidelines for doctors,  Richardson, 2002,  and another Richardson a smaller article for nurses,  Richardson, 2002.  For a review on CFS treatment for family physicians,  Craig & Kakumanu, 2002.  Follow-up of a rehabilitation program, taylor.etal06.txt, taylor.etal06.pdf.

Multidisciplinary Approach to FM

Exercise in combination with other approaches is recommended in a review,  Oliver et al., 2001.  A 2002-Cochrane review sums up various approaches,  Karjalajnen et al., 2002.  Predictors of improvement were difficult to define,  King et al., 2002.

EULAR evidence based recommendations for the management of FM, carville.etal07.txt, clauw07.txt, EULAR07.txt.

A number of articles were published on the managing of FM in 2002, pointing out the lack of clinical trials,  Barkhuizen, 2002,  hope for future "rational" managing,  Bennett, 2002,  the need to manage peripheral pain,  Borg-Stein, 2002,  non-pharmacological strategies  Burckhardt, 2002,  a realistic approach,  Littlejohn & Walker, 2002,  dysautonomia,  Martinez-Lavin, 2002,  sleeping disorders,  Moldofsky, 2002,  the various symptoms in all,  Silver & Wallace, 2002  and the office management,  Goldenberg, 2002.
