MCS

Among the syndromes 'adjacent to'  or 'overlapping'  CFS/FM,  the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) syndrome has been the least studied.  At long last a first consensus definition of MCS is reported,  Barta et al., 1999.  Germany has apparently included MCS in it's adaptation of the WHO ICD-10 code,  letter, Donnay, Germany, 2000.  A Danish MCS report has been released,  MCS Report, Denmark, 2002.

Overlap with other Syndromes

The overlap between MCS, and CFS and FM was studied,  Donnay & Ziem, 1999,  and  Bell et al., 2001.

MCS was reported in 5 clinical populations,  Nawab et al., 2000.  A book covering most available 2000-information on MCS,  MCS, book, 2000,  and a comprehensive commentary,  commentary, Paladin, 2002.

Mechanisms behind MCS

MCS-research is directed at environmental factors [toxic substances and/ or pollution] causing the clinical symptoms of the syndrome,  Little et al., 1999.  Odor perception does not seem to be the problem in MCS,  Caccappolo et al., 2000.

One theory on MCS is that of neural sensitization,  Sorg 1999,  Bell et al., 1999,   Bell et al., 2001.  A psychogenic explanation for MCS is discussed,  book, Staudenmayer, 2000.

A series of studies into the mechanisms behind MCS was published,  Clauw, 2001,  Ursin & Eriksen, 2001,  Fiedler & Kiepen, 2001,  Bell et al., 2001  and  Miller, 2001.

Dr. Marty Pall has, for several years, studied the cellular NO pathway.  Disturbance of this mechanism could possibly be the mechanism behind MCS  [and CFS],  Pall & Satterle, 2001, and  Pall, 2002,   Pall, 2002 (pdf).  A model for understanding MCS has been presented, involving G-proteins and benzalkonium salt,  Patarca-Montero & Fletcher, 2002.

Sick - Building Syndrome

Another new concept has emerged the sick-building syndrome,  Thorn, 2002.

Disease of many Names

The many names of this syndrome since 1832 is listed,  Donnay, 1998.
