Melatonin & CFS / FM |
MelatoninThe natural role of melatonin in the body is still being investigated. Because of its distinct circadian rhythm, melatonin has been suggested to be involved in regulation of various bodily rhythms one being of course, sleep.
In 2000, researchers warned not to overestimate the significance of melatonin in relation to sleep, as it only resets the body clock, press, Lewy et al., 2000, and editorial NEJM, editorial, Arendt, 2000.
A Medscape-review on effects of melatonin on sleep, Wurtman, 2000. One review on melatonin deficiencies in women includes its counter-effects such as tumor growth, Rohr & Herold, 2002.
Melatonin and FM/CFSStudies on Melatonin in CFS have shown both higher and normal values, Soutzos & Seth, 1998, and Korszun et al., 1999. A study on juvenile CFS found nocturnal melatonin levels higher than in normal individuals, Knook et al., 2000.In FM, studies have shown different results both low, normal and high values, Wikner et al., 1998, and Press et al., 1998.
Attempts to treat FM with melatonin, Citera et al., 2000, press, Citera et al., 2000. Also, a 2002-study found no effect on CFS symptoms by treatment with melatonin, Williams et al., 2002.
Circadian DesynchronyA study on circadian desynchrony in CFS was presented at the 2001-Sydney meeting, Tooley & Mc Cabe, 2001. Late melatonin onset has severe impact on life quality, Smits et al., 2002, Smits et al., 2002 (pdf). |
