Mycoplasma

Mycoplasmas are the smallest free-living bacteria known.  They have no cell wall, and a small genome of between 600 to 1500 kbp. Their limited genome makes them highly dependent upon their host for survival, like viruses.

Mycoplasma & CFS / FM

Mycoplasma has been detected in blood cells from CFS patients in Belgium Nijs et al., 2001.  The same authors studied mycoplasmas, including phenotypes, in European CFS patients,  Nijs et al., 2002 and nijs.etal03.txt.

Albeit the existence of mycoplasma in CFS and FM has been documented, the significance of this finding remains unknown.  It is not clear whether mycoplasmas are associated with CFS/FMS as causal agents, cofactors, or opportunistic infections, endresen03.txt, endresen03.pdf.

Mycoplasma may be important in child autism,  Nicolson et al., 2002,.

Mycoplasma - one among many Microorganisms ?

In a review article, Dr. Nicolson et al. deal with the treatment of multiple infections in CFS,  Nicolson et al., 2001.  Multiple articles deal with the issue of multiple infections,  Nicolson et al., 2003,   nicolson.et.al03.txt,               nicolson.etal.03.txt,  nicolson.etal03.pdf.

Drs. Nijs, Nasralla and Nicolson’s findings have been questioned recently by Dr. Susan Vernon’s group. These researchers could NOT find evidence of Mycoplasma DNA in CFS patients blood, vernon.etal03.pdf.

Legionella

Q fever is a common and acute but rare chronic zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. This pathogen belongs to the order of Legionellas. Its acute form manifests as atypical pneumonia, flu-like syndrome, or hepatitis, leading to chronic fatigue in a small number of patients, ledina.etal07.txt, ledina.etal07.pdf.

Chlamydia

The genetic code for a very unusual toxin excreted by C. Trachomatis has been identified,  NIH, Chlamydia toxin, 2001.

Brucella

A study by Nicolson et al. Found a subset of CFS patients having Brucella infection, nicolson.etal05.txt, nicolson.etal05.pdf.

Rickettsia

A third microorganism possibly connected with CFS is Rickettsia,  Jardin, 2000.  Rickettsia infections can be treated with tetracyclines - as can Mycoplasma and Chlamydia, all these organisms being sensitive to the same type of antibiotics.

Lyme (Borrelia)

The symptoms of chronic Lyme is similar to CFS, shor07.txt, shor07.pdf. Is Lyme disease always poly microbial? The jigsaw hypothesis, owen06.txt

Treatment Protocol – does it help ?

The mycoplasma treatment protocol includes treatment for Borreliosis/Lyme,  information, Nicolson, lyme, 2001.

One very circumstantial 2004-study on GWS with a very clear conclusion:  Antibiotics treatment for one year with Doxycycline does not help, and may even be harmful, donta.etal04.txt, donta.etal04.pdf.

Danger of Antibiotics

The enthusiastic treatment of Mycoplasma, as referred above, involves lengthy treatment regimes with antibiotics (months or years).  Polluting of the earth with antibiotics will give rise to multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains, such as Tuberculosis, and unlimited use of antibiotics possess dangers also to the individual patient taking the drugs.  A Ciproxin warning,  Ciproxin, neuropathy, 2001.
