Quantification Methods

Methods for quantifying the degree of fatigue in CFS is needed in order to document outcome of treatment,  Furst, 1999,  A short list of methods,  4 tests, health status, 1999.  Dr. Goldstein CA, USA has developed a CFS questionnaire, which he uses for patients to state their symptoms and claims useful for follow-up of patients,  Goldstein, worksheet.  Dr. Jason recommends monitoring symptoms hourly and daily to follow the course of CFS,  Jason et al., 1999.

The Karnofsky Rating Scale

The old traditional way of rating disability in general is by using the Karnofsky scale  here. It does not work very well with CFS, but until recently it was the only rating scale used.

The Chalder Scale

Evaluation of the Chalder Scale in CFS was done,  Morris et al., 1998.

'Short Form 36' Questionnaire

The 'Short Form 36' (SF-36), a validated outcome instrument with simple questioning was used in CFS,  Schwartz & Jones, 2000.

Comparison of Methods

For a comparison of the Euroqol with SF-36 in CFS,  Myers & Wilks, 1999, and for the WHO QoL 100 in CFS,  De Vries & Van Heck, 1997.

The Fennell Phases

A new approach has been introduced by Dr. Jason's group called the Fennell phases  [named after Dr. Fennell, member of the team],  Jason et al., 1999,  with an empirical verification,  Jason et al., 2000,  and   Jason et al., 2000.

Disease Specific Questionnaire

Dr. Klimas, on the 2002-CAA website, still states the need for better standards,  Klimas, 2002.

A new attempt was made by the Belgian CFS research team, Nijs et al., 2002,   Nijs et al., 2002 (pdf).

A Swedish attempt, using "positive odds ratio" measures for quantification of FM, has been evaluated,  Ejlertsson et al., 2002.

A Japanese attempt to create a fatigue scale in young CFS patients,  Kobayashi & Demura, 2002.

Pain Diagrams

Quantification or scalating of pain in FM is being studied also,  Triffitt et al., 2002.  A German translation of the Arthritis self-efficacy short-form scale works fine in FM,  Mueller et al., 2003.

Family Response Questionnaire

One article focuses on family response,  Cordingley et al., 2002.
