Sleep

Mechanisms of immune-to-brain and brain-to-immune signaling involved in mediating physiological sleep and altered sleep with disease, lorton.etal07.txt, lorton.etal07.pdf.

Sleep characteristics of persons with CFS and non-fatigued controls: reeves.etal.06.txt, reeves.etal06.txt.  Evidence for the existence of objective alpha-delta sleep disturbances in CFS, vanhoof.etal.07.txt, vanhoof.etal07.txt, vanhoof.etal07.pdf.  Twin studies have demonstrated differences in reaction to sleep delay, armitage.etal07.txt, armitage.etal07.pdf.

Periodic breathing during sleep is affected in FM, shah.etal06.txt.  Disturbed alpha-sleep in FM,  Roizenblatt et al., 2001.  Hypersomnolence in FM patients and polysomnographic abnormalities correspondingly,  Sarzi-Puttini et al., 2002.  Actigraphy useful for monitoring sleep patterns in FM and depression,  Korzun et al., 2002.  The alpha wave sleep pattern characteristic of FM is the same as in primary sleep disorder,  Schneider-Helmert et al., 2001.  Cyclic patters of symptoms are characteristics for FM, including the cyclic nature of sleep problems, rizzi.etal04.txt.

Good-quality sleep acts as a biobehavioral resource that minimizes allostatic load, hamilton.etal07.txt

Most CFS patients report sleeping problems, but studies have not revealed a CFS-specific pathological pattern,  Le Bon et al., 2000, pdf.  More recently, however, the same researchers found paradoxical Nrems distribution in "pure" CFS, le.Bon.etal07.txt,  le.Bon.etal07.pdf. Sleep impairment and depressive symptoms in CFS are independent,  Graffelman et al., 2002. CFS sample had a very high incidence (58%) of undiagnosed primary sleep disorder such as sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome and restless legs/periodic limb movement disorder, fossey.etal04.txt. Sleep quality perception in the CFS: Correlations with sleep efficiency, affective symptoms and intensity of fatigue, neu.etal.07.txt, neu.etal07.txt, neu.etal07.pdf.

Discordant twins had different sleep patterns but CFS symptoms did not correspond to sleep pattern,  Watson et al., 2003.  Also in a futher study, the Seattle group found discordant twins having only minor differences in sleep pattern, ball.etal04.txt, ball.etal.04.txt &  ball.etal04.pdf. The twin with CFS reported more sleepiness than the discordant twin, watson.etal04.txt.

Cerebrospinal Fluid

Normal cerebrospinal fluid levels of hypocretin-1 (orexin A) in patients with FM, taiwo.etal07.txt.

Circadian Rhythms

A study of body core temperature found no different circadian rhythm in CFS compared to normal,  Hamilos et al., 2001.  Continuous waist activity measurements disclosed lower activity in the day, but increased at night, tryon.etal04.txt.  Regulation of circadian rhythm by use of medication (melatonin) or phototherapy does not improve symptoms of CFS, nijs.on.waterhouse03.txt.

Sleep Studies

Basic knowledge on sleep-wake patterns are still scarce, one study focuses on the neuroimmune regulation of sleep,  Rogers et al., 2001.  Prevalence of nonrestorative sleep complaints in the general population, ohayon05.txt, ohayon05.pdf. Sleep quality in patients with FM using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, osorio.etal06.txt.

Studying for sleep disturbance, a first night effect is to be taken into consideration before clinically significant habituation, lebon.etal03.pdf.  A recent study on SAQ(c) sleep factors found indications of significant abnormalities with CFS, unger.etal04.txt, unger.etal.04.txt.  Women with FM had fewer mean spindles per minute of NREM stage 2 sleep and lower mean spindle time per epoch of NREM stage 2 sleep, landis.etal04.txt.

Sleep Medication

The drug Modafinil has helped one (1) individual with CFS to recover, turkington.etal04.txt, turkington.etal04.pdf.  A meta-analysis of FM and sleep medication cyclobenzaprine, tofferi.etal04.txt.
